Ark Avilon Trip!

This is close-encounter animal bonding at its best!

I went to Ark Avilon Zoo last Saturday because my product manager sponsored the Sky Fun Club event held there. The zoo is located at the Fronterra complex near the Fun Ranch and Tiendesitas. Who would have thought that there would be a zoo in the inside this shopping area?

As I entered the zoo, I went directly upstairs because that’s where the event was gonna happen. And voila! As I reached the top step, a freely roaming chicken passed by me as if greeting hello. And he was not alone. There were also other non-flying birds roaming the area. And I also caught a glimpse of the enclosed space for bunnies and hamsters. They were being fed by the little kids with carrots stuck at the end of long sticks. The bunnies clamored over the carrots. The scene was very funny. It was as if the bunnies have not eaten anything in years! Mala-MRT ang level ng tulakan dito! I then went to the other side and found the little gathering area. Near it was a play area with hammocks, swings, slides and other play stuff. Since the program was not yet starting, I took some quiet time at the hammock. :p I got bored a little later on and went exploring the whole zoo as well. I saw different kinds of birds and fishes and at the lower floor were sun pandas, tigers, tapir, geese, parrots and lots more! I came near a parrot at a tree branch and I was shocked because it screeched on me. I later found out that he did that to everyone who came near him. XD A major attraction and source of commotion as well was Jenny, a monkey (I dunno what type) who will hug you and take a picture with you. She’s really lovely. She wore a summer dress and pants and a pair of pink crocs. :P She’d hug you tight and wouldn’t mind all the flashes so as to take a picture with you. Too bad, I didn’t took a picture with her. At the first place, I didn’t bring my own camera. I only had my poor cellphone on hand.  More than caring for the environment and the other creatures around us, I have learned some fun facts as well which were scattered all over the zoo. I learned that:

1. Hummingbirds are the only birds which can fly backwards.
2. An owl’s eye is tubular that’s why it won’t move.
3. The swan is the only bird that has a penis.
4. And many more!

Overall, the whole Avilon experience was fun! I actually don’t know how much the fee was ‘cause I got in for free but I think it’s around P200. And it’s really worth it. It’s a great experience and you’ll get to learn a lot as well. :D

Lessons Learned

Finally!

I passed the most crucial year in my life as a college, BS Business Administration and Accountancy student specifically, and I hope I’m off to a better year ahead. Well, I don’t expect any of my subjects to become easier – I know they’ll even be harder. I just wish I can manage my time better and be a little more used to all the hassles of my college life.

This summer I got accepted as a management trainee in a big pharmaceutical company. At first I was a little skeptic about it but I think I’m loving my job. Although half the time I really don’t do anything and just read modules or market studies, I am really learning a lot about things you actually do at work. By the way, I’m working under the marketing department.

Before, I had this notion that not all the things we learn from school are actually used in the real business world. I actually thought it was a lot different in the bigger world outside school. But now I’m starting to realize that yeah, whatever we do in school are also just some typical things you do at work. However as to my observations, there are also a lot more things that a real employee does and what we do. There really isn’t any dull moment at work. You do paperwork, meet with clients, meet with partner agencies, arrange projects, and most importantly, keep track of everything! I’m amazed how my boss manages to do all these things. I think if I was in her place, I’ll be so dumb it’s like I had amnesia.

Everyday is information overload for me. My boss has been working for the company for quite some time and she also came from two other companies both handling marketing jobs there. Everything that she has learned from her past experiences, she shares with me and I am very grateful for that. But sometimes it’s really hard to digest about 300 pages of studies that you have read or a thick module about marketing – a subject that I haven’t taken yet in school.

Anyway, I try as hard as I can to take in as much information as my brain permits. I’m also having fun with other things I do. I initially didn’t want this internship as a lecture series, I want to actually do something! Even if it sounds stupid, I do appreciate my boss asking me to deliver things, to do backyard surveys, or photocopy some papers. That’s better than doing nothing or just sitting there the whole day, stretching my brain as far as it could go. Another thing that I also enjoy is doing fieldwork. I’m a person who really doesn’t mind walking a very long distance or traveling and going to places even if I’m just commuting. I love getting away from the usual home, school, office, mall thing. I also like meeting different people even if not actually being so close to them.

So that’s it for my first week. It was a lot of fun and actually, I didn’t notice that a week has already passed. :) I’m looking forward to the next one. Six weeks to go!
